Starbuck, Minneapolis Rocks, Wolf Lake, Urbank-Parkers Prairie, Red Wing, Fort Ripley, Hutchinson, and Sobieski all won weekend tournaments.
Starbuck, Minneapolis Rocks, Wolf Lake, Urbank-Parkers Prairie, Red Wing, Fort Ripley, Hutchinson and Sobieski all won weekend tournaments. The tourneys ran from Wednesday night June 11 through Sunday, June 15.
Here is the rundown:
In Red Wing the Aces won the Dewey Tauer Invitational by beating Faribault 12-1. They followed that up with a bottom of the ninth single by Jimmy Bombach to beat last year's class "C" champ Plato 3-2. In the final they hung with Mankato through eight innings leading 1-0 when the wheels came off the Mankato wagon. Red Wing scored nine runs and won 10-0. Brandon LaRue was the winner throwing seven innings giving up five hits and two walks. Mankato got to the finals by beating St. Michael and Rochester. Hastings won the consolation game over Shakopee and Rochester beat Plato 4-1 for third place. Red Wing outscored their opponents 28-3 in this high-test tourney.
At Cannon Falls, the Minneapolis Rocks beat the host Bears 7-2 to win the tournament. Cannon Falls beat New Prague 9-2 and Rosemount to get to the championship. The Rocks beat Winthrop and the Edina E-Sox to advance. The Metro Merchants won the consolation championship 9-7 over the New Prague Orioles. In the third place game Rosemount defeated Edina 8-7.
Detroit Lakes held their first Annual Angels Amateur Baseball Tournament and Wolf Lake came away with the Championship beating Crookston 6-0 on a one hitter by Ryan Brietbach. Wolf Lake got to the finals by beating Jamestown Merchants 5-4 and Perham 7-1. Crookston beat Jamestown Elks 5-4 and Vergas 6-0 to advance. Rain washed out the 7th and 5th place games, however, Vergas defeated Perham 7-0 to capture third place. Detroit Lakes reestablished their town team in 2006 after the last team folded in 1997. They reported good crowds and great entertainment.
The Brownton tournament saw Bird Island losing to Brownton, and Hutchinson pounding Waconia 18-1 in the first round. Then in the third place game Bird Island beat Waconia 12-6. In the Championship Hutchinson prevailed 11-7 against Brownton.
Bemidji held an eight team tourney over the weekend and Ada placed 7th with a 3-0 over East Bethel. Bemidji placed 5thbeating Soderville 6-3. Dent beat the Minneapolis Blue Sox 12-6 for 3rd and Fort Ripley was victorious over Wadena/Deer Creek 3-2 to win the championship.
In Sobieski they played a round robin tourney on Sat. and Sunday. On Saturday Sobieski beat Sauk Centre 5-1. Then they beat the Midway Snurdbirds 6-3. Lastrup beat Sauk Centre 10-6 and then they beat the Snurdbirds 6-0. On Sunday, Sauk Centre beat Midway 5-2 and in the Championship Sobieski defeated Lastrup 6-3. Final tournament standings were: Sobieski 3-0, Lastrup 2-1, Sauk Centre 1-2 and Midway 0-3.
Chokio had a "new lights" celebration on Friday night and a community picnic Saturday morning and they sandwiched a tournament around them. On Friday Wheaton beat Chokio 3-1. Saturday, Urbank-Parkers Prairie was victorious over Norway Lake-Sunburg 8-3. The third place game was Norway Lake-Sunburg 3, Chokio 0. Urbank-Parkers Prairie won the championship with a 9-0 five inning, rain shortened game over Wheaton.
Dumont hosted a two pool tournament on Friday through Sunday. They also battled some rain, however, it didn't stop any games from being played. Here are the scores of round-robin play: Pelican Rapids 4, Dumont 0; Starbuck 4, Sisseton 0; Dumont 5, Luverne 3; Starbuck 1, Canby 0. Luverne 4, Pelican Rapids 1; Sisseton 12, Canby 8. For 5th place Pelican Rapids beat Canby 12-11, 3rd place was Sisseton 15, Luverne 4 and the Championship was Starbuck 3, Dumont 2 in nine innings. Hank Frisch reported lots of rain and lots of fun.
In Gaylord three teams got together for three game day on Saturday. In game one Chisago Lakes lost to Kasson 3-2. Next, Gaylord shut-out Kasson 5-0. In the final game of the day Chisago Lakes beat Gaylord 4-2.
